Dental emergencies can happen to anyone, no matter how careful you are with your teeth! Whether you wake in the night with an ache or a pain, or injure your gums while playing your favourite sport, dental emergencies are unpredictable and can be scary if you’re unsure about what to do.
That’s why our team always tries to accommodate dental emergencies – we’re here for you when the unexpected happens to you or your family. Read on for tips on dealing with dental-related emergencies.
Accidents happen. When they happen to your teeth, however, you should have a professional look at the damage or discomfort as soon as possible.
Your first step should be to make an emergency appointment with us (or your nearest dentist if you’re out of town). Our team is ready to help you address any pain or emergency, helping you reduce the risk of a situation becoming worse. A visit with us can mean that you reduce your recovery time and increase your chances of solving the problem entirely.
Whether it’s at a sporting event or just an unavoidable accident while going about your daily life, injuries to the mouth can result in teeth becoming dislodged from their socket. A damaged tooth that is partially attached to its nerves is a genuine dental emergency, and time is of the essence if it is to be saved. Though it may seem tempting, do not attempt to remove the tooth yourself, and instead, head straight to a dental professional. If the tooth becomes dislodged completely, do not handle the tooth by the root or run it under water. Try to keep the tooth in your mouth, or (if necessary) keep it in a shallow container of milk.
It’s not always trauma or injuries that cause dental emergencies, though. For instance, a toothache should always be examined by a professional. This is not just because they’re painful, but also because tooth discomfort can be a sign of other underlying causes, such as abscesses.
Left untreated, such conditions can become highly complicated, so it's best to nip them in the bud as soon as possible. Plus, toothaches can be extremely distracting, uncomfortable and keep you up at night – a dentist can help you relieve symptoms whilst figuring out a more in-depth solution.
First of all, do not panic, even in painful situations. While dental emergencies can be unnerving, there’s a lot we can do to help you through any injuries or issues. Stay calm and get in touch with us – we’re here for you when those unfortunate surprises occur.
